8 tips for surviving a heat wave

Uncategorized

To Do List:

  1. Stay indoors as much as possible and limit your exposure to the sun
  2. Drink fluids often, particularly water or juice, even if you do not feel thirsty, to help your body’s thermostat stay cool.
  3. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect the sun’s energy if you must go outside.
  4. Apply a minimum of 30 SPF sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
  5. Keep pets indoors and refill their water bowls frequently.
  6. Eat well-balanced, light and regular meals.
  7. Check on your family, friends and neighbors, especially if they live alone.
  8. Avoid extreme temperature changes; a cool shower after being outside could cause hypothermia.

Not To Do List:

  1. Do not do strenuous activity such as running, biking and lawn care work.
  2. Do not drink high caffeine or alcoholic drinks; they can dry out your system.
  3. Do not eat high-protein foods; they increase your body’s water loss and heat production.
  4. Do not leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle.
